Summer movie blockbusters roll out in May - Democrat and Chronicle

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 04:55 AM PDT

The first official day of summer isn't until late June. Luckily for filmgoers, the summer movie season kicks off the first weekend of May. Why would anyone want to wait for the most boisterous offerings of the year?

Here are some big films to look forward to as the temperature turns to sweltering. Don't worry, movie theaters have air conditioning. And as always, dates are subject to change.

May

Iron Man 2 (May 7). Robert Downey Jr. is back, and this time he's joined by Scarlett Johansson, Mickey Rourke and Don Cheadle. The previous iteration was the second biggest earner of 2008, second only to The Dark Knight.

Robin Hood (May 14). If you had to pick up the pieces from Kevin Costner's 1991 version, you'd probably hope for talent the likes of Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott. This rendition of Robin Hood is set to open the Cannes Film Festival, a strong indication that Universal loves the finished product.

MacGruber (May 21). Generally speaking, Saturday Night Live creations go poorly. However, the trailers for MacGruber look promising.

Shrek Forever After (May 21). Three years have passed since Shrek the Third made us collectively realize the series was on its last legs. Mike Myers hopes to prove otherwise in search of the family dollar.

Sex and the City 2 (May 28). After the first effort made nearly six times its production budget, Warner Bros. started sending out sequel contracts. Can Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw recapture the magic this time around?

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (May 28). Jake Gyllenhaal brings the wildly popular video game to life with his take on Prince Dastan.

June

Marmaduke (June 4). Owen Wilson lends his voice to the comic strip dog, Marmaduke. The A-Team (June 11). The trailer features a tank, in mid-air, firing at an airplane. That's almost the very definition of a summer action film.

The Karate Kid (June 11). Can't get enough of those '80s remakes? Karate Kid is looking to cash in on your childhood movie watching habits.

Toy Story 3 (June 18). Pixar only makes great movies. But is the contractually obligated Toy Story 3 starting to push the limits of audience credulity? Can we really cheer for the gang to abandon Andy?

Jonah Hex (June 18). Megan Fox and Josh Brolin bring a lively comic book adaptation to the big screen. The vibe? Western meets horror.

Knight and Day (June 25). Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz riding atop the same motorcycle, shooting at bad guys, cracking wise all the while. It could very well be this year's Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Grown Ups (June 25). Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider and Kevin James star in this "buddy reunion" comedy.

July

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (July 2). Bella (Kristen Stewart) is finally forced to decide between warring vampires and werewolves.

The Last Airbender (July 2). Secrecy surrounds M. Night Shyamalan's adaptation of the Nickelodeon Network's Emmy-winning kids' show. One thing is certain: M. Night really needs a summer hit.

Predators (July 9). Two things to like about this sequel to the original Predator: One, Robert Rodriguez came up with the concept and, two, Adrian Brody is the lead "tough" guy in the film.

Despicable Me (July 9). Universal sets out to prove that DreamWorks and Pixar don't have the monopoly on animation.

Inception (July 16). The Matrix meets Leonardo DiCaprio in Christopher Nolan's topsy-turvy attempt at a Best Picture win ... from the unlikely month of July. It's so crazy it just might work.

Salt (July 23). This film showcases Angelina Jolie doing what she does best: energetic action without remorse. A dash of political intrigue and espionage has been thrown.

Ramona and Beezus (July 23). Beverly Cleary's popular children's book comes to life in a rare G-rated summer offering.

August

The Other Guys (Aug. 6). Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell show what not being a hotshot policeman is all about.

Step Up 3-D (Aug. 6). The Step Up franchise becomes the latest to attempt to cash in on the 3-D craze.

The Expendables (Aug. 13). Every action star ever minted, including Bruce Willis, Sly Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Ludgren, Mickey Rourke and Arnold Schwarzenegger, makes an appearance. With that much muscle, who really needs plot?

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Aug. 13). The potential sleeper hit of the summer from Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz) and Michael Cera.

Johnny Depp: Stephen Jones Mugging & Ozzie Movie - Thaindian.com

Posted: 03 May 2010 10:56 AM PDT

Johnny DeppMay 03 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to reports in The Sun Johnny Depp has walked right out of the movies to become a real life action star. The forty-six year old star of "Alice in Wonderland" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" was said to have stepped in and stopped a would be crime when his friend, British singer Stephen Jones was held up for his cash by a wanna be mugger who was brandishing a broken bottle.

Johnny Depp and his musical pal, Stephen Jones-the frontman for Babybird were leaving a Los Angeles recording studio when Jones was reportedly accosted by the mugger. Depp supposedly rescued Jones "from a mugger brandishing a broken bottle" according to reports. "It was an extremely scary moment," another "friend" tells the Sun. "This guy looked off his head."

So how exactly did a movie star who has so far only pretended to be an action hero/villain and more end up saving his friend from being mugged? "Johnny looked him straight in the eyes and told him to back off," claims the friend, after which the wide-eyed hoodlum supposedly stared at Depp and said, "'I ain't stealing from Captain Jack'" before putting the bottle down. "Johnny gave him a few bucks and told him to straighten up his life."

It is being reported at one gossip cop sight that this entire story is a hoax. The site claims that Johnny Depp was not in Los Angeles when this reportedly happened, nor was he even in the US. They swear that Depp is supposedly still in Europe, and that Depp's representative said that the bottle bandit incident never happened. Since several other sites than "The Sun" have claimed the story as true, it seems to be the case.

In other Johnny Depp news, the actor has reportedly been chosen by Ozzie Osborn as well as his wife, Sharon, to play the part of the rock star in a movie about Ozzie's life. Ozzy Osbourne, 61, said last year of his life; "What's left to wish for? A number one album would be good. And to have a movie made of the book, maybe with Johnny Depp playing me - I'd like that. "But, really, I'd like to go back in time and make better choices. Still, I know now that there is no such place as Utopia. Even if I do make it to heaven, you can bet your life the toilet will stink."
