Boycott target Movie Gallery shutting down - OneNewsNow

bad movieMovie Gallery -- at one time the second largest video outlet chain in North America -- is closing down. A pro-family group implies that informed consumers can take credit, at least in part, for shuttering a distributor of porn movies.

 

At one time, video retailer Movie Gallery boasted thousands of outlets around the United States, becoming North America's #2 video retail chain (~4,700 stores at its peak) after buying out competitor Hollywood Video in 2005. But after closing more than 2,400 stores over the last three years and continued losses in 2009, the company has announced it plans to shut down its 1,900 remaining stores.

American Family Association has worked for years to close down Movie Gallery shops, pointing out to consumers and law-enforcement authorities the company's practice of distributing hardcore pornography out of stores' "back rooms." Randy Sharp is director of special projects for AFA.

Randy Sharp AFA"We're now seeing that Movie Gallery, which is in its second bankruptcy in the last five years, is continuing to close more and more stores," he notes. "At one time, Movie Gallery had over 2,000 video stores. They're now down to just a few hundred."

Several years ago, AFA launched a boycott of the stores and continued it with success in several states. In Mississippi alone 80 percent of the stores were shuttered. The AFA spokesman says that came about because the pro-family group raised awareness to communities in that state, citizens became involved, and the law was enforced.

"The next step," says Sharp, "is to get the federal government to begin prosecuting illegal obscenity -- which they have not done for many, many years. The Justice Department has been so lax and they've allowed illegal material to be distributed into communities in violation of state and national statutes."

Movie Gallery was founded in Dothan, Alabama, and is now headquartered in Wilsonville, Oregon.

Mubi will roll out in Europe this fall

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has inked with online film library site the Auteurs -- rebranded as Mubi -- to incorporate its services onto the PlayStation 3 game console.

The distribution deal allows PS3 users to download Mubi for free, watch streaming ad-sponsored films for free or via pay per view or a monthly subscription, allowing access to Mubi's entire catalog, SCEE prexy-CEO Andrew House said Tuesday in Cannes.

Mubi will roll out this fall in western Europe.

Launched by prexy Efe Cakarel in 2009, with early support from Costa Films, the Auteurs offers arthouse and indie films, festival gems and classics.

It taps fare from Celluloid Dreams, whose prexy, Hengameh Panahi, is also prexy of Mubi Europe. Other movie suppliers include Criterion Collection, Artificial Eye, Bac Films, Cineart, Hopscotch and the Martin Scorsese-founded World Cinema Foundation.

Mubi has just signed up all of Agnes Varda's films, Mexican portmanteau pic "Revolucion" and Im Sang-Soo's Cannes competition player "The Housemaid."

"Our partnership with PlayStation brings online cinema to TV screens around the world," Cakarel said.
