Movie Review: 'Letters to Juliet' - Delaware County Daily Times

LOS ANGELES (AP) --- Juliet might want to take her own life all over again if she knew the gooey depths to which Hollywood would sink in her name to woo an audience.

The doomed heroine of "Romeo and Juliet" is the nominal inspiration for "Letters to Juliet," an unbearably predictable romance that would profane her name if it were not lifted a notch by the graceful, if inexplicable, presence of Vanessa Redgrave.

The movie takes viewers on a road trip through the gorgeous Italian countryside, which at least makes it pretty to look at. But Amanda Seyfried and Redgrave are stranded along the romantic byways in a story so phony it feels more inspired by the works of William Shatner at his histrionic worst than by the works of William Shakespeare.

Director Gary Winick ("Bride Wars") and screenwriter Jose Rivera ("The Motorcycle Diaries") start piling on contrivances almost from the outset as wannabe New York City journalist Sophie (Seyfried) heads off on a trip to Verona, where Romeo and Juliet's tragic tale unfolded.

It's a pre-honeymoon trip with fiance Victor (Gael Garcia Bernal), who is opening a restaurant and wants only to check out wineries, cheese makers and other culinary establishments to inspire his own business. Left on her own, Sophie stumbles onto a group that writes replies to lovelorn women from around the world who leave letters seeking advice from the fictional Juliet on a wall at Verona's Casa di Giulietta.

By a fluke, Sophie finds a half-century-old letter written by Claire, an Englishwoman who relates a tale of a broken love affair with the Italian man of her dreams. Sophie fires off a passionate response that prompts Claire (Redgrave), now widowed, to return to Verona in search of her long-lost Lorenzo.

Along for the ride is her skeptical grandson Charlie (Christopher Egan), who takes an immediate dislike to Sophie and this whole endeavor, so you know what that means: Sophie joins Claire and Charlie on a wherefore-out-thou-Lorenzo quest that takes them all over Italy, the perfect setting for a Manhattan romantic to question her feelings for her absentee fiance and wonder if studly Charlie might be one of those snooty Brits with a secret heart of gold. You know, like Colin Firth.

You don't need to write Juliet asking if Claire will find Lorenzo or who Sophie will marry. Every turn of "Letters to Juliet" is obvious and expected, even insufferable.

Seyfried, who scored a hit this winter with the Nicholas Sparks love story "Dear John," squeaks and whines her way along here. She has little chemistry with the bland Egan and even less with the surprisingly dull Bernal.

The elegant Redgrave somehow floats above this mawkish mess and its sappy dialogue, even when she has to utter some of it herself. Next time, she should just write to "Dear Abby."

"Letters to Juliet," a Summit Entertainment release, is rated PG for brief rude behavior and sensual images, some language and incidental smoking. Running time: 105 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.

Facebook Boss Zuckerberg Movie will depict Seamy Life ... - Gather.com

Posted: 16 May 2010 06:30 AM PDT

Still under fire for privacy changes on Facebook, and with instructions of how to leave Facebook circulating the internet, he will now have to deal with the story of his life, including the fact he stole the social network idea from fellow Harvard classmates. Ultimately a lawsuit occurred and Zuckerberg paid $65 Million to his former classmates.

Sean Parker (who assisted in expanding Facebook) knew Zuckerberg was driven not just by money or fame but also sexual insecurity. While he is depicted as receiving sex in bars, Parker runs the business.

And the rest of the story:

Movie depicts seamy life of Facebook boss

The 26-year-old billionaire, who is already under fire for his website's abuse of privacy, now faces ridicule

JUST as he hoped to clean up his image, Mark Zuckerberg, the inventor of Facebook, is to be portrayed in a Hollywood film as a ruthless and untrustworthy sex maniac.

The website and its 400m users have been beset in the past week by rows over changes to its privacy settings.

However, they have nothing on the invasion of privacy facing Zuckerberg in a £40m black comedy called The Social Network, adapted from The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich, with a screenplay by Aaron Sorkin, creator of The West Wing.

Six years ago Zuckerber created what was to become the internet phenomenon Facebook in a "tidal wave" of grief after being dumped by his girlfriend.

On Friday, as Zuckerberg celebrated his 26th birthday, he faced another tsunami of anger, this time from Facebook users who turned the socially awkward youth into the world's youngest billionaire.

Zuckerberg wanted to enjoy his birthday in the Caribbean. Instead, the pale-faced supergeek is spending the weekend in crisis meetings in California, seeking ways to calm many of Facebook's users who fear that website changes mean he is going to sell details of their on-line lives to the highest bidder.

A horrified Zuckerberg told colleagues he wants to establish himself as a "good guy", a task made more difficult as the draft script of the film leaked online.

The Social Network is a highly dramatized version told in flashbacks recalled in the drama of a court hearing. The film, set for release in October, opens on the night of February 4, 2004 when Zuckerberg, then 19, is seen to be dumped in a Harvard bar by his girlfriend, Erica.

She tells him he will "go through life thinking that girls don't like you because you're a tech geek". The reality, she says, is rather more upsetting: "I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that that won't be true. It'll be because you're an asshole."

In the film Zuckerberg retreats to his college dormitory where, in a drunken fever, he writes the computer code turning Harvard's annual collection of student photographs and biographies into a website where he and his male friends rank Harvard women as barnyard animals. Thirty minutes after "Thefacebook" goes live, it is so popular that it crashes Harvard's computer network.

The film shows how Zuckerberg, played by Jesse Eisenberg, also 26, drops out of college and moves to Silicon Valley in California where he builds Facebook with Sean Parker, co-founder of the music piracy site Napster, played in the film by Justin Timberlake, 29.

The early operation was funded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, twins who were stars of the Harvard rowing team. They commissioned Zuckerberg to expand the Facebook code to create a social networking site for their athletic friends.

Zuckerberg agreed but, according to the film, as Facebook catches fire across American colleges, he cuts them out. This leads to a court battle, which in 2008 reportedly ended with the twins being awarded $65m (£44m) by a Delaware judge.

The twins, who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics coxless pairs race, are now studying for business MBAs at Christ Church, Oxford. Last month they rowed for the Dark Blues in the Boat Race against Cambridge, which Oxford lost.

The film claims that after Zuckerberg quit Harvard his personal life spun out of control, with Parker helping him indulge his fantasies with a stream of "groupies". Sorkin's screenplay suggests Parker knew Zuckerberg was driven not just by money or fame but also sexual insecurity. While he is depicted as receiving sex in bars, Parker runs the business.

Yet Zuckerberg may have had the last laugh: Parker sold his share of the firm for about $200m. But, says Forbes, Zuckerberg is now worth $4 billion.

Critics who have seen the draft script for the film, which is being produced by Kevin Spacey, artistic director of the Old Vic theatre in London, and directed by David Fincher, say it portrays Zuckerberg as a "borderline-autistic conniver"

"Field of Dreams" House and Field for Sale - WorstPreviews.com

Field of Dreams House and Field for SaleSubmit Comment
In the 1989 movie "Field of Dreams," Kevin Costner builds a baseball diamond out of a corn field. Now the owners (Don and Becky Lansing) of the site where the field was built by Universal Studios are selling the property. The asking price is $5.4 million.

The baseball diamond is in the middle of a cornfield in eastern Iowa and along with the rest of the site, it is a popular tourist destination. Over 65,000 visitors come to the farm each year to buy t-shirts and post-cards, and also the chance to play some ball.

Up for sale is the diamond, a two-bedroom house, six outbuildings that include a concession stand, and a 193-acre parcel. The land includes the mystical cornfield where the ghosts of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, "Moonlight" Graham and others emerge to play ball.

The site has already received a number of inquiries, with some people thinking of putting up a hotel, water park and even a minor league ballpark on the farm.
