| Sears, Kmart launch Alphaline Entertainment movie download service - engadget Posted: 29 Dec 2010 02:06 AM PST Sears and Kmart Team with Sonic to Launch Movie Download Service RoxioNow-Powered Alphaline Entertainment Service Now Live and Providing Consumers Instant Access to Movies and TV Shows Novato, CA (December 28, 2010) - Sonic Solutions® (NASDAQ: SNIC) today announced that RoxioNow™ platform licensee, Sears, has officially launched its online movie download service, Alphaline Entertainment http://alphaline.roxionow.com. The new service enables Sears and Kmart customers to download entertainment online, including new movies on the same day they are released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Sonic is working with Sears on a multi-phase rollout that includes making the service available from a broad range of connected devices and ensuring compatibility with studio-supported digital programs. Sonic's multi-year agreement with Sears extends the reach of the RoxioNow platform which powers a range of digital services for leading brick and mortar retailers, cable operators, PC manufacturers, game system vendors, consumer electronics makers, and Hollywood studios' direct-to-consumer initiatives. Yes, Sears Holdings (SHLD) on Tuesday launched an online movie-download service that pits it against those Web giants in the digital home-entertainment market. Sonic Solutions's (SNIC) RoxioNow platform, which can deliver movies and other content to a variety of Web devices, will power the long-planned service, called Alphaline Entertainment. The service enables customers to download movies the same day they become available on DVD and Blu-ray. Sears Holdings, which owns both the Sears and Kmart retail chains, signed an agreement with Sonic earlier this year. It joins a growing group of offline retailers that have been entering the digital-delivery market, which is largely dominated by Netflix today. Best Buy (BBY), for example, also uses Sonic's Roxio platform for its CinemaNow service. Sears shares rose 1.6% to close at $70.02 on Tuesday. Netflix investors apparently weren't scared off by the news: Its shares grew 2% to close at $183.67.
